Timing of November 8 City Commission Meeting
The November 8 City Commission Meeting/Work Session falls on election day. Historically, the City Commission has had an abbreviated meeting on election night. The City Commission may wish to consider moving the start time of the November 8 meeting up to accommodate citizens that wish to participate in election night.
Old Fashioned Christmas Parade
On December 3, 2016 the annual Old Fashioned Christmas Parade will be held on Massachusetts Street between 7th Street and 13th Street. The parade is an all horse-drawn parade featuring authentic carriages, buggies, and wagons decorated for the holidays. The parade will begin at 11:00 a.m. The route will follow its traditional path from South Park north on Massachusetts Street, then east on 7th Street, then south on New Jersey Street, then east on 15th working their way toward the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Public Works cost for this event is approximately $650 and Police Department cost is approximately $4000, which will be paid from the Transient Guest Tax Fund (see attached route map).
Downtown Holiday Lighting & Santa Rescue
On November 25, 2016 Downtown Lawrence, Inc. will sponsor a holiday lighting ceremony in the 900 block of Massachusetts Street. The event will also include a staged rescue of Santa Claus by the Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical department from the roof of Weavers Department Store. Live entertainment will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the US Bank plaza at 900 Massachusetts Street, followed by speakers and the holiday lighting. Traffic will be blocked from entering the 900 block of Massachusetts with traffic control set up at 8th Street, 10th Street, Vermont Street, and New Hampshire Street. Public Works cost for this event is approximately $100 and Police Department cost is approximately $500, which will be paid from the Transient Guest Tax Fund (see attached map).
Updated Utility Rates to take effect November 15, 2016
Pursuant to previous Governing Body action, the rates for water and wastewater, solid waste and stormwater are increasing effective for bills with service beginning on November 15, 2016. The total monthly increase for all three services assuming an average residential customer using 4,000 gallons of water a month is $5.02. See the attached memo for additional information.
