Executive Summary: |
On September 15, 2015, the City Commission approved support of three sports-related events which with Transient Guest Tax funds. The events were the NCAA 2015 Midwest Cross Country Regional Meet, the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Meet and the 2017 USATF Junior Olympics. KU has invoiced the city for the two NCAA events. The city paid the sponsorship for the cross country meet in 2015 and now the reimbursement for the May 2016 NCAA Track and Field meet is ready for payment. The City Commission authorized $56,905 for the NCAA Track and Field meet but the actual costs for the meet came in lower than projected at $49,073.13. This figure represents 33% of the cost of hosting the meet with KU Athletics at Rock Chalk Park.
These are the types of events which have a direct benefit to the travel and tourism industry with confirmed overnight stays and a variety of economic impacts. A report on the NCAA Track and Field meet for 2016 was produced. This five-day event had an overall economic impact of $3.1M. Anecdotally, we heard from our hotels and local businesses that this event had a positive impact on sales and the athletes/coaches/families were excellent temporary additions to the community during the event. |

The fiscal impact to the City is $49,073.13. This item was not budgeted but was authorized after the budget process was complete. Funding will come from the Guest Tax Fund.
