Municipal Equality Index
On October 19, 2017 the Human Rights Campaign released the 2017 Municipal Equality Index (MEI). The MEI is an annual evaluation of municipal laws, policies, and services affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. The City of Lawrence has received a MEI score every year since 2013.
This year the City received a score of 74 points out of 100, an increase of 13 points from 2016. The City uses the MEI as an informational tool and will continue to look for ways to improve. Social Service Funding Advisory Board and Community Development Advisory Committee Board Consolidation
On August 8, 2017 the City Commission directed staff to bring forward a recommendation on the consolidation of the Social Service Funding Advisory Board and the Community Development Advisory Committee. The attached memo outlines the implementation plan for bringing this recommendation forward.
September 2017 Monthly Building Permit Reports
The Building Safety Division issued 188 building permits in September, with total construction for the month valued at $19,291,213. Total permit fees assessed for the month were $107,096, and total review fees assessed were $4,759. Permits were issued for twenty-three (23) new residential projects, including sixteen (16) single-family dwellings and seven (7) duplexes. Staff Memo Monthly Permit Report Year-to-Date Summary
LED Lights Update
Attached is a report regarding the installation of LED lights.
Joint City/County Letter to Kansas Corporation Commission
The attached letter was signed jointly by the City of Lawrence and Douglas County and sent to the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) regarding saltwater injection wells proposed for Douglas County. The attached response from the KCC was received today.
Santa Fe Station Historic Registry Nomination to be Considered
The City of Lawrence is in the process of seeking historic registry acceptance for the National and State registries for the Santa Fe Station. The building is eligible for the registry due to its historical significance. One of the benefits of historic registry status is the ability for the City to access historic tax credits. These tax credits would provide additional revenue toward the restoration project. The nomination will be considered by the Kansas Historic Sites Board of Review at its November 19, 2017 meeting.

Lawrence Rotary Arboretum gains accreditation
The City of Lawrence Rotary Arboretum has received Level I Accreditation by the ArbNet Accreditation Program and the Morton Arboretum for achieving standards of professional practices for arboreta and botanic gardens. The ArbNet accreditation program is the only global initiative to officially recognize arboreta at various levels of development, capacity and professionalism. See attached for more information.
October 2017 Sales and Use Tax Distribution
The City received its October sales and use tax, along with its share of County sales and use tax
distribution. Total received was $3,468,667.55. Of this amount, $3,438,263.20 was from sales
and use taxes city-wide. The remaining $30,404.35 was from sales in the three Transportation
Development Districts (TDD). See attached report for more information.
