Report forthcoming on SPL Structure Evaluation
Justin Burgoon, senior structural engineer with BSE Structural Engineers LLC, conducted a follow-up inspection of the cracks in the interior and exterior walls of Sports Pavilion Lawrence Friday, June 16, 2017. Burgoon had previously conducted an inspection in 2015 and in his report (attached) stated “the cracks in the architectural wythe are cosmetic and not a structural concern.”
Burgoon indicated he had no concerns on anything seen this past Friday and is currently reviewing the two inspections and will formalize his summary report by Tuesday, July 11.

Santa Fe Station Update
Several months ago, the City learned that the BNSF Railway was interested in pursuing a land donation for the depot, rather than a long term land lease. It was not possible to complete the negotiations associated with the change from a long term land lease to a land donation in the time needed to meet the Kansas Department of Transportation deadline related to the grant to restore the station. Given this, staff has proceeded with working with BNSF and Amtrak to execute the long-term land lease in order to meet the deadline and keep the grant project viable. The signed documents will include the lease-back of certain interior space to BNSF at this point. The City will be able to meet the KDOT deadline to close on the real estate by June 30th, enabling the project to proceed with bid letting late summer/early fall. Meanwhile, the City believes that the parties are still interested in pursuing the land donation but that will be in the future, allowing the restoration project to commence and further time to discuss details on a future donation.
