Capital Improvement Planning Best Practices:
Attached is a briefing on best practices for Capital Improvement Planning (CIP). Staff thought it would be of value for the City Commission to have access to a CIP briefing that was written by another industry expert. It briefly reviews the concepts and steps for a successful CIP. Although this year’s process was fairly new for Lawrence, it followed roughly the steps that is considered industry best practice. Staff will be following up with a debriefing later this fall on ways that we can help make the process as productive as possible.
Friendship Garden in Sister City Eutin, Germany, opens
Eutin, Germany was selected to host the state garden show or Landesgartenschau this year. With support from the city commission ($2500) and the Sister Cities Advisory Board/private donations ($4250), the Landesgartenschau includes a Sister Cities “Friendship Garden” that pays homage to the long-standing relationship with Lawrence. The garden opened in June and several Lawrence and Sister Cities representatives attended including Mike Dever, former mayor, and Kelly Scholz, past president of the Sister Cities Advisory Board as well as several students.
The attached translated article from a German newspaper highlights the opening reception in June when water from the Kansas River was ceremoniously poured on the garden with water from Lake Eutin while the Dean of the KU Music School, Bob Walzel, played “Home on the Range” and “What a Wonderful World.”
