Joint City/County Resolution of Support for a new Comprehensive Transportation Program for Kansas

Please include the following item on the City Commission regular agenda for consideration at the September 9, 2008 meeting:

 

BACKGROUND

The State Comprehensive Transportation Program passed by the Kansas Legislature in 1999 ends in 2009.  The transportation improvements have both economic and safety benefits.  There are still substantial transportation needs.

 

The League of Municipalities and Kansas Association of Counties are working together to advocate for a new transportation program that benefits local and state economies.  Governing bodies of both City and County have been asked to review their transportation needs and adopt resolutions supporting a new program of transportation needs.  Projects that have been funded in the City of Lawrence during the last ten year program include:

The City and County have agreed on this list of projects.  On August 20, 2008 the County approved signing the resolution pending the City’s approval.  The League of Kansas Municipalities & Kansas Association of Counties Request is attached.  The Kansas T Link website describes KDOT’s efforts in developing a recommended plan.  I plan to attend the meeting on September 19, 2008 in Topeka, Kansas.  

 

ACTION REQUESTED

Adopt Resolution 6798 of the City of Lawrence and Douglas County Kansas endorsing transportation improvements for the City of Lawrence and Douglas County and supporting a new statewide comprehensive transportation program.
