Planning Efforts
for 2008 |
I wanted to take an opportunity to update City and County administration on a few of the upcoming major planning efforts the Planning and Development Services Department will undertake in 2008.
Since mid-year 2007 we have shared with the Planning Commission and governing bodies that our work plan for 2008 would include efforts in North Lawrence, the area west of K-10, and the area that includes the Farmer’s Turnpike corridor near the interchange of I-70 and K-10. To date we are well on our way with drafting the West of K-10 Sector Plan and this plan will soon be released for public comment. This plan will establish important development policies for developing this area in the years to come.
The Planning Division recently completed, and the governing bodies adopted, the Revised Southern Development Plan (Sector Plan) and the Southeast Area Plan (Sector Plan). Planning staff has substantially completed work on the Farmland Plan (Special Issue Plan) and also many elements of the Comprehensive Plan amendments associated with the proposed Lawrence SmartCode.
Completing these
efforts allows us to allocate our resources toward other priorities the
governing bodies have recognized and directed staff to address. Along with the Long Range Planning Division’s
regular duties, including comprehensive plan updates, floodplain management,
committee staffing, etc., the Division will begin working this year on three
major projects that deserve special attention.
These include a plan for the K-10 & Farmer’s Turnpike area, a plan
for portions of
The Division will be working on all of these projects to some degree in 2008; however, emphasis will be placed first on completing the K-10 & Farmer’s Turnpike plan since the Division recognizes that this plan is one that can be completed in a relatively short timeframe and is one that includes fewer inherent challenges than the other plans. This plan will benefit the established goals of planning for employment centers and industrial uses to provide increased opportunities for the region. It will also define transitional and other appropriate uses for the area and will outline policies that will guide development in the area.
The attached timeline,
boundary
map, and plan
outline have been established as a guide for completing the K-10 & Farmer’s
Turnpike plan. Information related to
this plan will be posted to http://www.lawrenceplanning.org
as it becomes available. We anticipate
and welcome a great deal of public input in all of our planning efforts and we look
forward to the opportunities to make
