Mr. Dave Corliss

Interim City Manager

4th Floor, City Hall

Lawrence, KS

Dear Dave:

Please place the 2006 USA Cycling Collegiate Road Championship criterium race on the March 28 Lawrence City Commission’s agenda. The proposal already has been approved by Downtown Lawrence Incorporated and has been scrutinized and approved by the Lawrence Public Safety Committee. We request the Lawrence City Commissioners approve closing sections of downtown on Sunday, May 14, 2006 for USA Cycling’s Collegiate Road Championship’s criterium race. This year we have compressed the race route and by shifting a portion of the race over to New Hampshire Street, we have accomplished several goals. They are:

1)       Open up as much of Vermont Street to accommodate church parking near 10th and Vermont and for customers coming downtown

2)       Open up the intersection of 7th and New Hampshire

3)       Create a race route that is more spectator friendly

Last year the City of Lawrence hosted nearly 400 collegiate cyclists from 95 Universities around the United States, generating a total direct spending of $350,000 into the Lawrence economy.

Attached you will find an informational sheet about the event and a map of the course that should aid the commissioners in their decision. Thank you for considering our request.
