Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   Travel has a positive effect on the city of Lawrence and the nation’s economic prosperity; and

WHEREAS:   Travel to Lawrence and Douglas County provides significant economic benefits with $265 million spent directly by travelers in 2017; and

WHEREAS:   Travel is among the largest private-sector employers in Lawrence and Douglas County, supporting 3,847 jobs in 2017 – one out of every 13 jobs in the county; and

WHEREAS:   Traveler spending directly generated tax revenues of $42.9 million in 2017, with $25.3 million accruing to state and local governments; and

WHEREAS:   Travel is a pillar of economic growth, creating jobs at a faster rate than other sectors.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lisa Larsen, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim May 5-11, 2019 as,

“NATIONAL TRAVEL AND TOURISM WEEK”
