Office of the Mayor

Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls attention to the fact that sexual trauma and abuse is widespread and impacts every person in this community; and

WHEREAS:   Rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment harm our community, and statistics show one in five women and one in seventy-one men will be raped at some point in their lives, and that two out of three sexual assaults are never reported to the police; and

WHEREAS:    Child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that one in six boys and one in four girls will experience a sexual assault before the age of 18; and

WHEREAS:   The theme of this year’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month’s Campaign is “I Ask for Consent”.  Consent is a clear, concrete example of what it takes to end sexual harassment, abuse, and assault. The goal of the campaign is to empower everyone to put consent into practice. I Ask for Consent is the statement by which individuals will demonstrate that asking for consent is a healthy, normal, and necessary part of everyday interactions.

WHEREAS:   We join advocates and communities across the country in taking action to prevent sexual trauma and abuse.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lisa Larsen, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2019 as

“sexual assault awareness month”

in the City of Lawrence.
