2018 Bicycle Boulevard Update |
The 2018 Bicycle Boulevard project is currently in the conceptual design phase. Part of this phase is to do two pop-up demonstrations to display some of the potential design elements and allow people to experience them first hand. The pop-ups will be installed March 21, 2019 (weather permitting) and will be in place for approximately 2 weeks. The pop-ups will consist of:
Ø A chicane on 21st Street east of Naismith using a product called BikeRail to create the bump outs and narrow the street.
Ø An intersection treatment with pavement markings and signage at 13th and Connecticut that is referred to as a Toucan crossing. This treatment limits the vehicular movements through the intersection, creates a space specifically for bicycles to cross, and generally should slow down traffic through the intersection making it easier and safer for pedestrians and bicycles to cross. These types of crossings have been used in Fort Collins, Tucson, Palo Alto and others.
A survey will be available on the City website for residents to give feedback on their experience walking, biking, or driving through the pop-ups. In addition, another open house is being scheduled for the end of March to present conceptual designs and gather feedback from residents.
After the design team has collected the feedback they will present the conceptual designs to the Transportation Commission and City Commission. Once buy-in on the conceptual design is achieved the design team will begin work on the construction documents so that the project can be put out to bid this summer.
