Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   Since its founding in 1884, Haskell Indian Nations University has made significant and positive socio-economic impacts on the City of Lawrence and its students, faculty, and staff continue to contribute to the diversity, richness and collaborative spirit that makes the City of Lawrence unique; and

 

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence fully embraced and supported the Indian Celebration that occurred on October 27-30, 1926 at Haskell, the largest event in the history of Lawrence, and which brought the general public into direct contact with thousands of Tribal people from across the country which positively influenced the public perception towards Native peoples; and

 

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence recognizes the Haskell Arch as its very own World War I Memorial, and the 415 students, faculty, and staff of Haskell, and every military veteran who honorably served the United States in World War I; and

 

WHEREAS:   Since its dedication, the Haskell Stadium has served our local community as the site of many sporting and community events; and

 

WHEREAS:   Keeping Legends Alive, September 21-22, honors the service of all veterans, memorializing Haskell’s 415 service members and the complete story of the 1926 Dedication, as documented in the Haskell Cultural Center and Museum exhibit and supported by many partnerships throughout the Lawrence and Douglas County community.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Stuart Boley, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim September 16 – 22 as

 

“Keeping legends alive week”

 

in honor of the historic 1926 Dedication of the Haskell Arch and Stadium which is one of the quintessential stories in the history of Lawrence, Kansas.
