Approve change order in the amount of $119,449.47 to Miles Excavating Inc. for work performed on project number PW1535, 19th Street Reconstruction from Naismith to Alabama – Phase A, 2017 CIP Project No. PW17E10.

Executive Summary:

Reconstruction of 19th Street from Iowa to Naismith is being completed in two Phases.  Phase A plans included reconstruction of the 19th & Naismith intersection with a new traffic signal and completion of the gap sidewalk on the north side of 19th Street from Naismith to Alabama.  The storm sewer on Naismith from 18th Street to 19th Terrace was replaced as the condition of the existing line was failing.  The University of Kansas will contribute $27,000; the estimated cost of the adjacent shared-use path for Phase A.  Naismith Hall donated right-of-way and easements to the city for construction of bike lanes and sidewalks along the south side of their property.

The change orders for the project included: additional curb and gutter and sidewalk on 19th Street Terrace ($50,000); retaining walls, irrigation; grading and driveway repairs on 19th Street east of Naismith ($31,000); additional waterline work ($18,000); pavement marking ($18,000); and additional storm sewer ($2000).

The total project cost was $2.71M; the project budget was $3.45M. Pursuant to the City’s purchasing policy, change orders that result in a significant cumulative increase to a purchase order require City Commission’s approval.
