WHEREAS:    The travel industry has a positive effect on the City of Lawrence’s economy and identity and also benevolently impacts business productivity and the well-being of travelers and locals; and

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence in 2015 generated $244.5 million in annual travel spending, $38,400 in state and local tax receipts and directly employed 2,710 people with total wages of $57.9 million; and

WHEREAS:   It is well known that frontline employees are the most important resource in the hospitality industry both for companies and for the customer; and

WHEREAS:   Debbie McCarthy, the longest serving staff member of eXplore Lawrence, has provided a friendly and welcoming smile while also sharing local tourism information to over 85,000 visitors since 1996 is retiring.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Leslie Soden, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby recognize Debbie McCarthy and her 21 years of dedicated service as the Director of Visitors Services at the Lawrence Visitor’s Center.
