Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey, the fiercest hurricane to hit the United States in thirteen years and the strongest hurricane to hit Texas since Hurricane Carla in 1961, struck Rockport, Texas, damaging or destroying hundreds of homes, apartments, businesses, churches, and government offices, and killing at least one Rockport resident; and

WHEREAS:   The devastating flooding happening in Houston and Harris County, as well as other communities along the Gulf Coast, is beyond comprehension; and

WHEREAS:   Watching our country come together in support for those who are injured and helping total strangers in need, reaffirms that the overarching nature of Americans is to be kind and not hate; and

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence joins the country in offering our condolences for the lives lost, and our support to the communities affected by Hurricane Harvey as they heal from this tragedy.

NOW, THEREFORE, the Lawrence City Commission extends our heartfelt love and support to the communities affected by this horrific disaster.
