Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   Farmers markets are important outlets for agricultural producers nationwide, providing them with increased opportunities to meet consumer demand for a variety of fresh, affordable, convenient, and healthful products sold directly from the farm; and

WHEREAS:   The Farmers Markets of Kaw Valley play a key role building a strong local food economy—a community priority highlighted in our new Douglas County Food System Plan—that supports the viability family farms and entrepreneurs and preserves agricultural lands;

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence recognizes the myriad benefits of farmers markets for producers and consumers, such as fostering safe, healthy and welcoming neighborhoods, and is fully committed to supporting farmers markets' continued success.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Leslie Soden, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the week of August 6 – 12, 2017 as

“farmers market week”

in Lawrence in coordination with National Farmers Market Week and encourage the people of Lawrence to celebrate farmers markets.
