Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   For more than a century, the bicycle has been an important part of the lives of most Americans and is a viable and environmentally sound form of transportation and an excellent form of recreation; and

 

WHEREAS:   Creating bicycle-friendly communities has been shown to improve citizens’ health, well-being, and quality of life, to boost community spirit, to improve traffic safety, and to reduce air pollution and road congestion; and

 

WHEREAS:   Education, starting at a young age, of all would-be cyclists and motorists as to the proper and safe operation of bicycles and motor vehicles is important to ensure the safety and comfort of all users; and

 

WHEREAS:   Lawrence, Kansas has been named a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists; and

 

WHEREAS:   Lawrencians of all ages, ability, family background, and socioeconomic status will experience the joys of bicycling through encouragement activities, educational programs, or going for a ride;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Leslie Soden, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2017 to be

 

“BICYCLE MONTH”

 

and Wednesday, May 10, 2017 to be

 

“Bike to school day”

 

and the week of May 15-19, 2017 to be

 

“Bike-To-Work Week”

 

in the City of Lawrence and I encourage everyone who is able to represent our city in the National Bike Challenge event beginning May 1, 2016 through September 30, 2016.
