Recognition of the winners of the 2017 Fair Housing Poster Contest.

Executive Summary:

At the February 16, 2017 meeting of the Human Relations Commission, the Commission directed staff to coordinate the third annual poster contest in recognition of April as Fair Housing Month.  A goal of the competition was to raise awareness of our local and federal fair housing laws among Lawrence school children and their families.  Teaching materials were also provided to explain how fair housing laws impact our quality of life and the protections they offer.

A subcommittee of commissioners, staff, and our community partners in the contest – USD 497 and the Lawrence Douglas County Housing Authority and Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc. worked to establish a theme of: “Celebrating 50 Years of CommUNITY” in recognition of this year’s 50th anniversary of passage of Lawrence’s fair housing ordinance.  The contest was open to all kindergarten through 12th grade students.  Over 80 entries were received and all were displayed at the Lawrence Public Library from April 5 to April 29, 2017.  Winning entries were selected by four judges representing the four partners in the contest – the Lawrence Human Relations Commission, USD 497, the Lawrence Douglas County Housing Authority and Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc.
