Executive Summary: |
The attached map shows the current locations of shop facilities for the Parks and Recreation Department. Our shops, staffing and equipment are set up in districts to minimize transportation time on daily tasks such as mowing, shelter cleaning, facility and landscape maintenance, athletic field prep, park restroom cleaning and litter pick-up. After transitioning to this system about 15 years ago, we feel this model has been very efficient and effective for service delivery, and we recommend its continuance in the future.
Facility Needs 1) Park District No. 3 Shop - With the addition of the Sports Pavilion Lawrence facility to the district’s inventory, which includes the Indoor Aquatic Center and park/trail development in the Northwest quadrant of the City, we have need of an additional maintenance facility. Currently, District No. 3 staff share space with Park District No. 1 staff at the shop, located on West 27th Street near the Youth Sports Complex. This facility is in good condition but is too small for all of the equipment housed and activities performed at the location.
Two options exist to remedy this situation:
1. Constructing a new facility on existing park property in the Northwest quadrant of the City, creating a separate shop for Park District No. 3 equipment and staff offices. 2. Build a second facility near the Park District No. 1 shop on West 27th Street.
Either of the above options would require approximately three-acres of land for the new facility.
2) Landscape and Forestry Shop – The facility at 11th and Haskell streets is ideally located with easy access to the City’s compost and forestry waste recycling facility. However, shop facilities, parking and yard space are limited. If Public Works and/or Solid Waste were to relocate, facility additions and yard expansion could take place on this site.
3) Park District No. 2 Shop - This facility is located at 19th Street and Moodie Avenue (19th Street and Haskell Avenue) is in good condition, and at a good location.
Park District No. 1 Shop - on W 27th Street is in good condition, and is at a good location. |
