CITY MANAGER’S REPORT

Update to Human Trafficking City Commission Discussion of 01/03/17
Following a presentation by The Willow Domestic Violence Center's Executive Director, Joan Schultz, to the City Commission at the time of the January Proclamation as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Lawrence, the City determined that training selected staff on the prevalence and common signs of human trafficking in the Lawrence community would be beneficial to the work of those who are tasked with reducing human trafficking in the community.
City and Willow staff, to include the Lawrence Police Department personnel, determined which City staff would likely benefit most from the training. The Willow and Lawrence Police Department developed a two hour training. Participants in the class will learn where it occurs and who is most vulnerable. They will gain a heightened ability to recognize human trafficking. City staff scheduled with the Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical Department to deliver the first round of training in April to the department's staff in six sessions. City Clerk's division will also be included in the first round. A review of the training will follow to assess if it met the training objectives. Subsequently other identified City staff will be offered the two hour training.
