City Manager report – Upcoming street events March to May 2017 that have been administratively approved |
The following street events are scheduled to occur:
St. Patrick’s Day Parade and 1 Mile Run – Friday, March 17th, 2017
The 2017 St. Patrick’s Day parade is an annual event held in downtown along Massachusetts Street. Staging for this event begins at 9:00 a.m. on the neighborhood streets between 11th Street to 18th Street and Connecticut Street to Massachusetts Street. The parade route through downtown will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 11:00 a.m. and at 1:00 p.m.; participants head North on Massachusetts Street and end up in North Lawrence. This year’s event will also feature a 1 mile run starting at 12:00 p.m. and concluding at 12:30 p.m. The race route will be held within the Massachusetts Street closure and will not add any additional impact to downtown traffic.
Olympic Downtown Shot Put – Thursday, April 20, 2017 to Saturday, April 22, 2017
The 2017 Olympic Downtown Shot Put is an annual event that brings the top professional athletes in this event will be held in downtown on the E 100 block of 8th Street. It will also impact the intersection of 8th Street and New Hampshire Street. The event will be held Thursday, April 20, 2017 to Saturday, April 22, 2017. Build out and set up of the shot put sector will occur Thursday, with the event being held Friday evening. Tear down will take place immediately after the event. All streets will be back open by 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
Earth Day Parade – Saturday, April 22, 2017
The 2017 Earth Day parade is an annual event that involves participants walking from Watson Park east on 7th Street and south on Massachusetts Street ending at South Park. The event begins at 11:00 am and is completed by 11:30 am. This event has been coordinated with the March of Dimes event on the same day, which is held in Watson Park.
March of Dimes Walk – Saturday, April 22, 2017
The 2017 annual March of Dimes walk is held in Buford Watson Park from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm. As part of the event, participants will walk along the public sidewalk from the park to Massachusetts Street to 11th Street and then back to the park using Kentucky Street. Participants will walk on the public sidewalk and will obey all traffic regulations and laws. No street closures are associated with this event. This event has been coordinated with the Earth Day Parade event on the same day.
Paw Valley 5k & Festival – Saturday, May 6, 2017
The 2017 Paw Valley 5K and Festival is an annual event that utilizes the downtown / east Lawrence 5K route. The 5K event begins at 10:00 a.m. with participants heading north on Massachusetts Street to 7th Street, where they head east into east Lawrence and return to Massachusetts Street at 15th Street, then back to South Park by 11:00 a.m. The festival portion of the event is held in South Park, which will close Massachusetts Street from South Park Street to North Park Street, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Cider Gallery Food Truck Festival – Saturday, May 6, 2017
The 2017 Cider Gallery Food Truck Festival is an annual event held in the arts warehouse district, in the 800 block of Pennsylvania Street and the 600 blocks of E. 8th and 9th Streets. The event will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
Art in the Park – Sunday, May 7, 2017
The 2017 Art in the Park fair is an annual event held in South Park. This event includes the closure of Massachusetts Street between North Park and South Park Street. It is held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Point to Pint – Saturday, May 13th, 2017
The 2017 Point to Pint event is a 5K that will start and end in downtown at 7th & Massachusetts Street. Participants will head into east Lawrence to 15th Street from the Burroughs Creek trail and return along the same route. The event begins at 8:00 am and will be completed by 11:00 am.
Home Run 5K – Monday, May 29, 2017
The 2017 Home Run 5k is an annual event that utilizes the downtown / east Lawrence 5k race route. The event begins in South Park at 6:00 a.m. with participants heading north on Massachusetts Street to 7th Street, where they head east into east Lawrence and return to Massachusetts Street at 15th Street, then back to South Park by 10:00 am.
Event organizers and city staff have coordinated these events with the appropriate organizations to include City emergency services, Downtown Lawrence, Inc., Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods, and the Lawrence Neighborhood Associations and adjacent property owners.
