Approve the purchase of one (1) Heil front load refuse truck with Curotto automated can for $271.661.08, utilizing the National Joint Powers Alliance (NJPA) cooperative purchasing contract. |

Executive Summary: |
Pursuant to the 2017 Capital Improvement Program (project PW17F6CIP), and the City’s equipment replacement schedule, Public Works Solid Waste Division requests authorization to purchase a front load trash truck in 2017. Staff recommends purchasing a Heil front load refuse truck utilizing the NJPA contract for this purchase. The truck will be equipped with a “Curotto Can” attachment, which enables utilization of the truck in residential applications in addition to typical commercial use. The attachment has automated side-arm tippers that lift standard style carts (see picture below). For example, the attachment will allow crews collect yard waste, trash and recyclables, uses that are not otherwise possible with a front load truck.
The Solid Waste Division seeks opportunities to increase automation of the fleet and services. Staff has proactively replaced rear load dumpsters for front load dumpsters where feasible, and those efforts will continue. The attachment on the front load truck will increase the versatility of the fleet and equipment. If approved, it would be the first in the fleet. |

This item was included in the 2017 CIP (#PW17F6CIP) and is funded in the 2017 Solid Waste Fund budget. The City obtained a quote of $271,661.08 through the NJPA cooperative purchasing contract, this is less than the $275,000 budgeted for the unit. The price structure includes a trade-in credit of $47,000 for unit #426, a 2006 rear load refuse truck
This unit is expected to increase operational efficiency and increase the fleet’s versatility. |
