Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: Originally established as the United States Indian Industrial Training School in 1884 as a boarding school, and evolving into a post high school, vocational-technical institution in 1935, Haskell began offering Junior college curriculum and became Haskell Indian Junior College in 1970; and
WHEREAS: Haskell Indian Nations University was established in 1993, currently representing over 130 federally recognized tribes from throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS: Haskell is a unique and diverse intertribal university committed to the advancement of sovereignty, self-determination, and the inherent rights of tribes; and
WHEREAS: Haskell will hold its first community event, “Experience Haskell”, on Sunday, October 9, 2016 from noon to 3:00 p.m. in recognition of Haskell’s place within and connection to the City of Lawrence; and
WHEREAS: The City of Lawrence recognizes its long and historic relationship with indigenous peoples of Lawrence and will celebrate its first permanent official Indigenous People’s Day on October 11, 2016.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the first week in October as
