Mental Health/Substance Abuse Issues in Municipal Court Pilot Program

The Lawrence Municipal Court, The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare, DCCCA, and the Bert Nash Mental Health Center have begun a year-long pilot program to better address the needs of defendants with mental health or substance abuse issues in the Municipal Court.  Two students pursuing Masters in Social Work degrees have been placed with the Court for the academic year as part of their clinical field education.  One student’s clinical supervisor is affiliated with DCCCA, and the other student is supervised by a Bert Nash employee.  An initial goal of the program is to improve access to community mental health and substance abuse treatment resources by helping to shepherd defendants through the process who might otherwise be unlikely to access these services on their own.  As the program develops and other needs are identified, the scope of services offered will expand and be refined.  The hope is that this program will be successful enough to warrant its continuation in subsequent years.
