RE: |
2017 Capital Improvement Project PW1527 Harvard & Wakarusa Roundabout (U-0561-01) |
Project Description
Wakarusa Drive is proposed to be reconstructed as part of the 2017 Capitol Improvement Project plan. This project will continue the widening of Wakarusa Drive from where it left off in the 2014 Capitol Improvement reconstruction project limits just north of Inverness Drive. This section of Wakarusa has significant curb and gutter deterioration, as well as, pavement and base failures. Wakarusa Drive is proposed to undergo full reconstruction where new pavement and storm sewer systems will be put in place with a new widened 5-lane roadway section which will include a center left turn lane, bike lanes, and new 6-foot wide sidewalks on both sides of Wakarusa. The Wakarusa widening will continue to just north of the Harvard Road intersection. The current 4-Way stop sign configuration at the intersection of Harvard & Wakarusa will be replaced with a 2-lane roundabout. This project is currently being designed in-house by city staff and construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2017 and completion in the fall of 2017.
Project Cost/Funding
The project will be partially funded by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). The city applied for federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds to help pay for the Wakarusa improvements. KDOT agreed to a 90/10 federal/city funding split up to a maximum of $600,000 to construct the roundabout at Harvard and Wakarusa Drive. Anything beyond that project scope will be non-participating and will be funded by the city. The preliminary estimate for the project construction cost is $2 -$2.5 million. The city portion of the project will be funded with infrastructure sales tax funds.
