RE: |
Traffic Calming on Kanza Drive |
Background
At the March 7, 2016 Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the Commission heard a request for traffic calming on Kanza Drive between Harvard Road and Wagstaff Drive (see attached). Kanza Drive is classified as a “local” street in a residential area. The City’s Traffic Calming Policy permits traffic calming devices to be placed on local streets if the 85th percentile speed of traffic is 5 mph or greater over the speed limit; or, if the 24-hour 2-way volume of traffic is greater than 1000. Traffic data obtained during November found traffic volumes below 1000 vehicles per day; however, the 85th percentile speed was approximately 39.7 mph; therefore, this street meets the minimum criteria for consideration of traffic calming.
Traffic Safety Commission Action
At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, one (1) resident of Kanza Drive spoke in support of traffic calming on Kanza Drive, expressing concern for the safety of the children in the area. The Commission, on a unanimous vote of 7-0, recommended traffic calming on Kanza Drive between Harvard Road and Wagstaff Drive.
Funding
This project will be prioritized and added to the list of approved projects until funding is available.
Action Request
It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission for traffic calming on Kanza Drive between Harvard Road and Wagstaff Drive.
