March 2016 Monthly Permit Reports
The Building Safety Division issued 239 building permits in March, with total construction for the month valued at $33,067,892. Total permit fees assessed for the month were $206,147. Permits were issued for forty-one (41) new residential projects, including eighteen (18) single-family dwellings, one (1) duplex and twenty-three (23) multi-family dwelling buildings. Safe Routes to School Transportation Alternatives Funding
In November of 2015 the City of Lawrence applied for Safe Routes to School funding through the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Transportation Alternatives program. The City of Lawrence has been awarded the full funding amount requested of $189,156 with a twenty percent (20%) local match of $47,289 for a total project cost of $236,445. With this funding, sections of sidewalk are proposed to be added in areas where children walk or bike to school and 10 Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons are proposed to be added to existing school crossings without a crossing guard present (see attached map). Plans for the project will be designed in-house with engineering staff and will be reviewed by KDOT. Construction is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2017.

City of Lawrence and USD 497 to Hold Public Meetings Regarding Parking and Traffic Flow Around Cordley, Langston Hughes, and New York Elementary Schools
The City of Lawrence and USD 497 staff to hold public meetings to discuss and receive input from residents about parking and traffic flow around Cordley Elementary, Langston Hughes Elementary and New York Elementary Schools. Recent construction changes to these schools have prompted staff to evaluate the potential need for changes to traffic and parking in the areas around these schools. The public meetings will be held as indicated in the chart below.

Each of these meeting will be held at the corresponding school. Interested residents are encouraged to participate in this process.
Intersection Repair Project
On Saturday, April 23, Lawrence community members came together at 10th and New Jersey to paint a mural on the pavement at the intersection. The project received a $1,500 arts grant from the Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission. See attached for more information.
