RE:

Fair Housing Month Poster Contest 2016

Background

At the February 18, 2016 meeting of the Human Relations Commission, the Commission directed staff to coordinate a 2nd annual poster contest in recognition of April as Fair Housing Month.  A goal of the competition was to raise awareness of our local and federal fair housing laws among Lawrence school children and their families.  Teaching materials were also provided to explain how fair housing laws impact our quality of life and the protections they offer. Community partners assisting in the contest include the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority, USD 497, Consumer and Credit Counseling, Inc.  This year, t-shirts were provided to all entrants containing art work submitted in last year’s contest.

A subcommittee of commissioners, staff, and our community partners in the contest – USD 497 and the Lawrence Douglas County Housing Authority worked to establish a theme of: “Fair Housing Is…”.  The contest was open to all pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students.

Over 115 entries were received.  Finalists were displayed at the Lawrence Public Library from April 1 to April 21, 2016.  Winning entries selected by the subcommittee for each grade level and will be recognized before the City Commission at their meeting on April 26, 2016.  The finalists are below:
