Upcoming events and services hosted by the Solid Waste Division

With spring around the corner, the Solid Waste Division is ready to host some of the most anticipated City events: compost/woodchip sale, electronic recycling event, and earth day celebration. In addition, the division is geared up to resume residential yard waste collection and offer a drop off option for yard waste on Saturdays. Below is a summary of these events and services. More details provided in the attachment.

 

Residential curbside yard waste collection on Mondays begins February 22nd :

Residential yard waste collection will resume on Monday, February 22nd. For a complete list of yard waste collection guidelines, please visit www.lawrenceks.org/swm.

 

Compost facility opens Saturdays beginning March 5th:

The City’s Wood Recovery and Compost Facility located at 1420 E. 11th Street will be open to the public on Saturdays, starting March 5th through mid-December, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the following:

 

Electronic Recycling & Secure Document Shredding Event - Saturday, March 19th:

The spring Electronic Recycling and Secure Document Shredding Event will be held at the Free State High School NE parking lot, 4700 Overland Drive on Saturday, March 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There is no recycling fee for electronic equipment except for CRT monitors/televisions ($10 per CRT monitor, $20 per CRT TV under 27 inches, $40 per CRT TV over 27 inches, and $50 per rear projection/console TV). Electronic recycling will be provided by MRC. There is no fee for document shredding (maximum of 3 bags/boxes). Secure document shredding will be provided by Jayhawk File Express. Documents will be collected on-site at the event and securely shredded off-site.

 

Compost and Woodchip Sale Event - March 24th through 26th:

The Compost and Woodchip Sale Event will be held Thursday through Saturday, March 24th, 25th, 26th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the City’s Wood Recovery and Composting Facility. The city will load trucks and trailers; $10 per bucket load/two cubic yards. Cash only.

 

Earth Day Parade and Celebration - Saturday, April 23rd:

The 16th Annual Earth Day Celebration in South Park, hosted by the City’s Solid Waste Division, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 23rd. The day starts with a parade, hosted by KU Environs, at 11:00 a.m. on Massachusetts Street from Seventh Street to South Park. At the park there will be live music, children’s activities, local food vendors, and educational exhibits. All activities are free and open to the public. The Lawrence Transit System will offer free rides on the T all day Saturday, April 23rd.

 

Follow up on drones and downtown cameras

At the February 2, 2016 City Commission meeting, a citizen asked about drones and downtown cameras.  Staff was asked to follow up on these items.  Attached is a staff memo which provides a summary.
