Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   Lawrence Transit System (The T) began in December 2000 when Lawrence residents recognized a need for transit in their community; and

 

WHEREAS:   Transit is vital to the community and economic development providing transportation to jobs, school, shopping and appointments; and

 

WHEREAS:   Transit provides transportation options for people who either do not own a car, cannot drive, or just choose to ride the bus instead of driving; and

 

WHEREAS:   Coordinated bus service with KU allows anyone to ride any bus in Lawrence, increasing transportation options for all bus riders; and

 

WHEREAS:   Transit reduces traffic on the road, helps the environment and reduces the need for parking; and

 

WHEREAS:   The T-Lift provides vital transportation for people who are unable to ride the fixed route buses due to disabilities; and

 

WHEREAS:   The Lawrence community supports transit, and it shows.  Ridership numbers increase each year and have reached over one million riders a year for the last two years.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of January, 2016 as

 

“lawrence transit month”

 

in the City of Lawrence and give full support toward enabling community members to ride the bus and enjoy the freedom and stress-free commute that transit provides.
