RE:

Landmark Nominations for 1345 West Campus Road, 1005 Sunset Drive, 304 and 302 Indiana Street, and 1624 Indiana Street

Background

In accordance with Chapter 22, The Conservation of Historic Resources Code, the Historic Resources Commission held public hearings for 1345 West Campus Road, 1005 Sunset Drive, 304 and 302 Indiana Street, and 1624 Indiana Street. After a consideration of the nomination material and public comment, the HRC determined that each property met criteria identified in 22-403. The HRC adopted resolutions recommending designation of the properties as Landmarks on the Lawrence Register of Historic Places and directed staff to draft the necessary reports to the City Commission.

Landmark Process

Chapter 22 requires the City Commission to consider the application of a landmark nomination at a public hearing.  The public hearing may be during a regularly scheduled meeting.  The City Commission may approve an ordinance designating a nominated structure as a landmark in accordance with the findings of the HRC.

If the City Commission denies the nomination, subsequent nomination attempts shall not occur within three years, or without a change of ownership of the property, whichever occurs first.

Action

Conduct public hearing.

Adopt on first reading, Ordinance No. 9187, for landmark designation of 1345 West Campus Road; Ordinance No. 9188, for landmark designation of 1005 Sunset Drive; Ordinance No. 9189, for landmark designation of 304 and 302 Indiana Street; and Ordinance No. 9190, for landmark designation of 1624 Indiana Street, if appropriate.
