Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

 

WHEREAS:   Alzheimer’s is a disease that is accompanied by symptoms of memory loss called dementia.  6.1 million adults in the United States suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and a new sufferer is diagnosed every seven seconds; and

                            

WHEREAS:   The dementia related symptoms that accompany diseases such as Alzheimer’s may include loss of mental function in areas such as: language, memory, visual and spatial abilities, or in judgment. There is no existing cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia but promising studies focusing on lifestyle treatments are being led by researchers in our region.  Bridge Haven Memory Care has four care homes all in Lawrence, Kansas that focus on caring for individuals with dementia in smaller, less confusing settings and they continue to advocate for better treatments and for a cure; and

 

WHEREAS:   Bridge Haven Memory Care continues to conduct free memory screenings and to educate caregivers and sufferers about resources; and raise funds for research through fund raising activities to benefit national Alzheimer's organizations; and

 

WHEREAS:   The month of November has been proclaimed as National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, a month to recognize the need for more research and assistance in dealing with the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of November 2015 as

 

“ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS MONTH”

 

in Lawrence and urge all citizens to extend their support for those struggling with Alzheimer’s Disease.
