Re: |
July 9, 2013 City Commission Meeting |
Please include the following item on the City Commission consent agenda for consideration at the July 9, 2013 meeting:
BACKGROUND
The Information Technology Division of the Lawrence Kansas Police Department is in the process of replacing the in-car video system with Watchguard. The servers and in-car components have been purchased and we have begun installation. During the past weeks, representatives from Watchguard have been on site to help with the set up and configuration of the system. It has come to our attention when discussing the requirements of the software environment with the Watchguard engineers that our existing database software (Microsoft SQL Server 2008) is out of date and not supported by the vendor’s system. Unfortunately, to support the newer database software, new server operating system software is also required.
DISCUSSION
In pursuit of meeting this need, we have come to the conclusion that to bring our server/database infrastructure up-to-date for the Watchguard system, we will need to purchase several software licenses:
This license allows us to install as many instances of Microsoft Server 2012 as we need, giving us the opportunity to update our older Microsoft Server 2003 and 2008 systems as well.
This license allows us to install the database infrastructure required to support Watchguard. It will also allow us to migrate our SQL 2000 and 2008 databases to a newer version, bringing our database systems up-to-date.
These client licenses give our users the right to access services provided by our servers running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition.
FUNDING SOURCES
The Police Department mill levy project line item (001-2-2110-6005) has been identified as the source of funds to cover the cost of purchase for the above listed equipment.
RECOMMENDATION
Police Department staff requests approval from the City Commission to authorize the purchase of two Microsoft Server 2012 Datacenter Edition License, two Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition 2 Core Licenses, and 200 Microsoft Server 2012 Client Access Licenses from SHI through the State of Kansas Contract (#36093) for $20,024.
