FISHING DERBY A HIT WITH COMMUNITY

This spring, children ages 5 years-old to 13 years-old had the opportunity to test their fishing skills at Mary’s Lake, 31st and Haskell Streets. There were 125 anglers that came and enjoyed a morning of fishing on the lake. The event was co-sponsored by Parks and Recreation, the Kansas Wildscape Foundation’s O.K. Kids program and Wal-Mart.

 

LARGE CROWDS GATHER FOR CONCERT SERIES’

The Lawrence City Band and Brown Bag concert series’ are both off to tremendous starts this summer. The City Band opened up on Wednesday, May 29, with It’s a New Season. More than 1,000 people enjoyed the City Band’s second performance of How the West was Won. The band performs every Wednesday at the William Kelly Bandstand located in historic South Park.

 

In addition to the City Band, the Brown Bag Concert series is also off and running. Large crowds gathered outside of U.S. Bank building on 900 Massachusetts St. over the lunch hour to see the performances. The Brown Bag concert series continues every Thursday at noon.

 

OUTDOOR FITNESS AREA INSTALLED AT DEERFIELD PARK

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department staff has completed the installation of a new outdoor fitness area located in Deerfield Park, 2901 W Princeton Blvd. The fitness area, located in the northeast section of the park, consists of five pieces of new equipment. The equipment includes a 2-person air walker, 4-person pendulum, abs and dips, 2-person ski, 2-level horizontal bars, combo lat-pull and vertical press. Outdoor fitness areas are becoming more and more popular throughout the country as people embrace this new wave of fitness that is keeping residents healthy and active. These outdoor fitness areas offer a chance for people to benefit from getting outside and exercising while also spending time in a park.
