Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development, characterized in varying degrees by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors; and

 

WHEREAS:   Such behaviors include Autistic Disorder, Rett Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and Asperger Syndrome; and

 

WHEREAS:   Autism affects 1 in 88 children and is more common in boys than girls; and there is no medical detection or cure for autism; and

 

WHEREAS:   We share a responsibility to ensure persons living with ASD have the opportunity to pursue their full measure of happiness and achieve their greatest potential.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert J. Schumm, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, April 2, 2013 as

 

“world autism awareness day”

 

in the City of Lawrence, and encourage all people to learn more about autism and what they can do to support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
