WHEREAS: The Cities of Lawrence, Kansas and Eutin, Germany became Sister Cities in October 1989; and
WHEREAS: This relationship grew from an idea of Helmut Scheewe, a teacher at the University of Kansas’s German language summer institute in Eutin, who first proposed that the Cities of Eutin and Lawrence further strengthen their partnership; and
WHEREAS: After the establishment of this Sister City partnership, Helmut contributed to the life-changing experiences of hundreds of high school students and their families, helping organize numerous cultural exchanges involving art, music and theater; and
WHEREAS: Helmut inspired the internship exchanges that provide Lawrence and Eutin residents unique international professional experiences, as well as serving as the key contact person during the crucial period of partnership growth in the 1990s; and
WHEREAS: His continued support and dedication to this Sister City program is an invaluable asset and today, I am honored to designate Helmut Scheewe as an honorary citizen of Lawrence, Kansas.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert J. Schumm, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby call on the citizens of Lawrence to recognize Helmut Scheewe for his impressive dedication and service in establishing and developing this Sister City program with the City of Lawrence, Kansas.
