Re:  Lawrence Arts Center energy efficiency project:  lighting retrofit

Throughout the month of August, Public Work Department and Lawrence Arts Center staff will be replacing inefficient lamps with high efficiency lamps in the track and recessed lighting fixtures throughout the facility.  208 total bulbs will be replaced, resulting in significant energy and cost savings:

Operating Cost/Year (old bulbs):       $4,560.68

Operating Cost/Year (new bulbs):     $789.80

Savings/Year                                  $3,770.87

kWh savings/Year                         44,891 kWh

New Equipment Cost                    $9,656.48

Simple Utility Payback                 2.56  Yrs

This lighting retrofit project will pay for the cost of the project in approximately 2 ½ years in the energy savings alone.  We anticipate reduced maintenance costs as well, due to the longer life of these bulb technologies.  Over the 16 year lifetime of these new lamps, we will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 521 tons of CO2, equivalent to taking 120 cars off the road.

This project is the result of the free energy audit conducted in March 2012 by the P1 Group.  This involved a thorough assessment of the building’s lighting and HVAC equipment, along with monitoring of building temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide levels.  The auditors recommended 3 Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) for the Arts Center.  The ECM with the lowest cost to implement, and the shortest return on investment was this building lighting retrofit.
