Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the forming of two battalions of Marines; and
WHEREAS: Tun Tavern, Philadelphia was the first recruiting office created on that day; and
WHEREAS: Many Lawrence citizens and City employees have followed in the footsteps of those first recruits and other Marines by serving their country throughout the world; and
WHEREAS: Since 1994, these former Marines have hosted a Birthday Celebration for the United States Marine Corps, inviting all the citizens of Lawrence and all Marines; and
WHEREAS: On November 10, 2011, the United States Marine Corps will be celebrating its 236th anniversary; and
WHEREAS: On this day, Marines all around the world will be celebrating 236 years of honor, courage, and dedication to duty; and
WHEREAS: This year’s Birthday Celebration will be held at the Dole Institute of Politics in Lawrence, Kansas, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2011;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Aron Cromwell, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 10, 2011 as
in Lawrence and invite all citizens of Lawrence and Marines to join together to drink a toast to the Corps on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
