RE:

Sustainability Advisory Board presentation to City Commission

The Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) has undertaken the task of reviewing and updating the Climate Protection Plan created by the Climate Protection Task force in 2008-2009.  The original Plan included seven recommended measures to reduce the City’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The SAB reviewed the seven strategies, and has created a 20-30 minute presentation to the Commissioners, detailing the City’s progress on each of the recommended strategies.  The SAB presentation includes the following recommendations for continued focus and investment:

1.) Maintain Momentum – Fund the Sustainability Coordinator Position

         Funding needed for 2013 budget.

Multijurisdictional (City/County) position promotes coordination of efforts.

2.) Invest in Energy Efficiency for Long Term Savings

City has reduced use by 6% since 2007 through energy efficiency and related long-term investments.

City has even greater potential for long term savings.

3.) Adopt Complete Streets Policy

All 3 Commissions (City, County & Planning) have received presentations.

Health Department has partnered to do education/outreach.

Complete Streets policies will contribute to a more sustainable City.

Due to the timeliness of recommendation #3, the SAB would like to request to be placed on the City Commission agenda adjacent to a discussion of the Complete Streets Policy.
