Office of the Mayor
In Recognition
Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: On September 11, 2001, the United States and the international community were shocked by the terrorist attacks which occurred in New York City, the Pentagon and southwest Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS: On that bright, sunny day in early fall, buildings were destroyed and lives were torn apart. All told, 2,977 innocent lives were lost in the attack and millions of Americans were affected by the acts of a few; and
WHEREAS: On that fateful day that changed our country forever, our Nation stood united and vowed to honor the victims, seek justice for those killed, and never forget the sacrifices made by public safety personnel and civilians in the wake of this national tragedy; and
WHEREAS: As a Nation, we must seek ways to continue to heal our collective heartache and educate our citizens and future generations to remember more than just the pain of that day. On September 11, 2001, the United States came together to support our friends, family and strangers alike; and
WHEREAS: Communities across the Nation mobilized to give blood, time, money and emotional support to those directly and indirectly affected. As citizens, we paused to understand what it meant to be part of a global community and strategize how the United States would reaffirm to the world that America would continue to uphold the freedoms that form the foundation of our society: equality, justice, liberty and democracy; and
WHEREAS: Now that 10 years have passed since that horrific day, I encourage all citizens of Lawrence to join together on Sunday, September 11, 2011 and participate in events that commemorate the events of 9/11/01 but to also celebrate the spirit of our Nation and the continued beliefs that we hold evident;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Aron Cromwell, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby call on the citizens of Lawrence to participate in local, state or national events that recognize or commemorate September 11, 2001.
