RE:	July 12, 2011 Agenda Item –Award Bid for Kaw Water Treatment Plant Sludge Collector Drive Replacement

Please include the following item on the City Commission Agenda for consideration at the July 12, 2011 meeting:

Award Bid No. B1132 for Kaw Water Treatment Plant Sludge Collector Drive Replacement to the low bidder Blaze Mechanical in the amount of $55,639 and authorize the City Manager to execute the contract agreement.

Project History/Status

The Kaw Water Treatment Plant currently has five basins that have sludge collection equipment. Two of the drive mechanisms were replaced last year as part of the Operations & Maintenance budget. The 2011 O&M budget has funds to replace one drive. The remaining equipment needing replacement is over twenty years old and has needed repair several times. These sludge collector drives are currently in use at the Kaw Water Treatment Plant and have exceeded their serviceable life. Utilities staff have developed bidding and construction documents for the sole source of a drive mechanism from the same manufacturer as last year to maintain consistency of equipment. However the installation was competitively bid by any contractor.

On May 25, 2011 the City Commission set a bid date of July 5, 2011. Three bids were opened: one from CAS Construction, LLC in the amount of $79,750, one from Garney Companies in the amount of $64,000, and one from Blaze Mechanical in the amount of $55,639.

Project Funding: 

The project will be funded from the 2011 Operations and Maintenance budget 501.7.7220.6034.

Action Request:  Staff recommends award of bid No. B1132 for the Kaw Water Treatment Plant Sludge Collector Drive Replacement to Blaze Mechanical in the amount of $55,639 and authorize the City Manager to execute a contract agreement.
