Change Order No. 1

2009 CDBG Sidewalk Gap Project - Project No. PW0929

June 21, 2011 City Commission Meeting Agenda Item

Introduction

2009 CDBG Sidewalk Gap project is now near completion. Construction of this project began in October of 2010, and following are some of the major locations where new sidewalks were completed as part of this project.  [See attached map]

Iowa Street on the east side between 23rd and 27th

23rd Street on the south side between Harper and Haskell

West 18th Street from Ohio to Vermont

Vermont Street from Massachusetts to Montana

27th Street from Redbud Lane to Naismith Bridge

Existing sidewalks along East 13th Street were also removed and replaced as part of this project

Change Order Details

The additional work consists of removal and replacement of existing sidewalk (including handicap ramps where needed) along the north side of 12th Street between South Park and Louisiana. This work is part of the KU lighted pathway project, and was included in the original project scope and budget developed in 2010. The 2010 CDBG funds allocated (and approved by the City Commission on May 11, 2010) for the KU Lighted Pathway project was $59,410.00

Adding this work to the 2009 CDBG Sidewalk contract would be cost-effective and would expedite the project as well. This work will have to be completed by August 12, the beginning of KU Fall Semester.

Project Cost / Funding

2009 CDBG Original Contract Amount (RD Johnson Excavating)

$229,076.20

Total project Cost to Date

$227,170.49

Add 12th Street Sidewalk (KU lighted pathway)

$  30,000.00

Total project cost (Final)

$257,170.49

Change Order No. 1 [257,170.49 – 229,076.20]

$28,094.29

Funding for Change Order No. 1 would come from the 2010 CDBG funding ($59,410) for the KU Lighted Pathway project; the balance of the Lighted Pathway funding will be utilized for other project cost, e.g. pedestrian lights, pedestrian signals at Kentucky and Tennessee etc. Funding from multiple other sources (City, 2011 CDBG and KU) has been allocated to complete the KU lighted Pathway project.

Project Schedule

The additional work along 12th Street (Change Order No. 1) will be completed by August 12, 2011 before the beginning of KU Fall semester.

Action Request

If appropriate, approve change order no. 1 in the amount of $28,094.29 (to be added to the current contract with RD Johnson Excavating) for the 2009 CDBG Sidewalk Gap project.
