Friends of Hiratsuka

& Hiratsuka - 20th Year visit – (Hilliard)

A new mayor has been elected in Hiratsuka.  A letter of congratulations has been sent from the Mayor Cromwell.

We are still waiting to hear about the status of this year’s youth exchange and official 20th year visit.  The drop-dead day for purchasing protected fare tickets for the youth exchange is May 19, and after that time a $100 cancellation fee will be in effect.

Twelve students of the original twenty are still committed to this year’s program.

$260 was raised at the Montana Mike’s event for Japan disaster relief.

Hilliard reported that a committee meeting had occurred exploring the establishment of a group similar to the Japanese “Jet Stream” organization.

Scholarship Fundraiser (Hodge)

Hodge indicated a committee meeting occurred on May 20.  The committee is examining the possibility of having a fundraising event which would coincide with the upcoming visit from Hiratsuka, if that exchange occurs.  The use of the Lawrence Country Club is being considered. The Gaumnitz’s have volunteered their home for a reception or other function.

Attendance Roster (Josserand)

Josserand distributed a draft copy of an attendance roster reflecting recent meeting attendance.

Friends of Eutin – (Albrecht)

There was a recent meeting by the Friends of Eutin.  About 30 people were in attendance.

Grant Opportunity – (Hodge, Keel)

Sister Cities International, in conjunction with the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership have announced a grant opportunity for US cities having Japan Sister Cities relationships.  A grant announcement was distributed and discussed.

It was decided to explore a potential grant application.  Keel appointed an ad-hoc committee consisting of Josserand, chair; Hilliard, and Hyler to explore this opportunity and report back at the June meeting.  Grant submissions are due June 15 for this year’s funding cycle.
