Whereas: The Special Olympics was founded in the United States in 1968 with current chapters in nearly 200 countries. The Jayhawk Chapter began in the 1970’s in Douglas County; and
Whereas: Brady is a member of the Jayhawk Chapter of the Special Olympics and a Lawrence resident; and
Whereas: Brady is the current Regional and State Champion in Special Olympic Powerlifting, and has held this title for 10 years, from 2001 to 2011, and is the current National Champion in the Natural Athletic Strength Association Special Olympic Category, and current NASA State Champion in Kansas and Missouri; and
Whereas: Brady is a 7-time World Champion in the World Association of Benchers and Dead-lifters Special Olympic Category and 4-time Outstanding Lifter in the WABDL Bench Press; and
Whereas: Brady is the 2011 Kansas City Sports Commission Special Achievement Award Recipient and is the 2009 Natural Athletic Strength Association Athlete of the Year; and
Whereas: Brady is known for his sportsmanship, his positive spirit, and his enthusiasm, and has paved the way for Special Olympians to compete in regular sports organizations events; and
Whereas: Brady will join the United States Special Olympic Team to represent the United States of America at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece from June 25 to July 4, 2011; and
Whereas: Brady won the 2008 NASA National Courage Award for overcoming all odds and always striving to the best that he can be, and has shown himself to be a great example for all those who must overcome trials while pursuing their dreams;
Now, thereforE, I, Aron E. Cromwell, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim, June 16, 2011 as
“BRADY TANNER DAY”
