RE:

Bicycle Parking in Downtown Lawrence Inventory

The Lawrence – Douglas County Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) and Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) are excited to present the approved Bicycle Parking in Downtown Lawrence Inventory.  MPO staff began developing this inventory and map in the summer of 2010 in response to a growing desire to understand the condition of existing bicycle parking in Downtown Lawrence.   The report was approved by the MPO Policy Board on April 21st, 2011.

This inventory is fundamentally different than previous inventories because it details exact locations and types of bicycle parking facilities located Downtown. The inventory documents over 300 bicycle parking spaces. Data collected about locations of bicycle parking in Downtown Lawrence was used in the creation of the Bicycle Rideability Map as a way to direct bicyclists to locations with available facilities.

The inventory has a recommendations section for ways to improve bicycle parking. Key recommendations include:

·         Update and enhance the existing bicycle parking standards to reflect more thoughtful planning and adherence to the national standards.

·         Develop and encourage the partnership with the Lawrence Central Rotary Club in their efforts to grow volume and placement of bicycle parking in Downtown Lawrence.

·         Develop long term bicycle parking.
