From the Community Housing Vision:  “Emergency Shelter:  A short-term (90-120 days) facility designed to assist people to move off the street in order to stabilize for movement to better housing options.  This shelter will focus intentionally on helping people move to their highest level of self-sufficiency.

 

 

Land Use Essential Components

1.      Enough land area to contain a 24/7 Shelter, Day center, and food program (access to 3 meals a day)

2.      Transportation / Bus Route (access to public or private transportation)

3.      Access to Medical – close proximity of transportation to facilities and programs

4.      Location should be compatible with adjacent areas of high pedestrian traffic

    1. KU/Haskell campuses
    2. Lawrence Schools
    3. City Parks
    4. Retail districts/areas/malls
    5. City Recreation areas

5.      Necessary Buffering for Site

                                                              i.      Fencing

                                                            ii.      Landscaping

6.      100 Bed capacity (including overflow)

7.      Separate sleeping spaces for Men and Women / adequate facilities for Men and Women

8.      Storage for client possessions

9.      Kitchen/Laundry/Showers (commercial kitchen, dining area, onsite food program)
