Status Update - 6th Street ITS project, City Project No. PW0823 KDOT award – FY 2013 ITS Set-Aside Funds |
Status Update
The 6th Street ITS project is now complete.
The main component of this project was the installation of fiber optic communication lines along 6th Street (from Massachusetts to Iowa) and Iowa Street (from 6th to 23rd). Some of the other important features of this project included installation of CCTV cameras at selected intersections on 6th and Iowa, installation of various hardware, software, video screens and other Intelligent Transportation System devices in the Traffic Building at 5th and Mississippi.
The benefits of the fiber optic based ITS system (on 6th and Iowa) include video-monitoring of intersections, instantaneous response to signal malfunctions and unlimited signal timing plan. In addition to improving the traffic signal operations, the ITS system will also assist and improve the emergency response by Police and Fire.
The total project budget of $500,000.00 was based on 50/50 cost sharing between the city and KDOT (ITS Set-aside funds in the amount of $250,000.00 previously awarded to the city). The project came under budget.
Attached pictures at various intersections were generated by the ITS computer at the Traffic Building by utilizing the video-monitoring capabilities of the Intelligent Transportation System.
The City receives additional $150,000.00 (ITS Set-aside funds) from KDOT
On February 22, 2011 the City Commission authorized staff to apply for 2013 ITS Set-aside funding to extend the ITS network along 23rd Street (from Iowa to the East Hills Business Park).
Following the submission of the application, staff also made a presentation to the Selection Committee (at KDOT) highlighting various aspects of the future plan to extend the ITS technologies along 23rd Street.
On April 29, 2011, the city received the letter
of award from KDOT for FY 2013 ITS Set-aside funding in the amount of
$150,000.00. City’s matching share would include $30,000.00 (total project
budget: $180,000.00) plus engineering design services to be performed in-house by
city staff. This project would extend fiber optic communication lines and other
miscellaneous ITS devices along 23rd Street from Iowa to the East
Hills Business Park. This will bring all traffic signals on 23rd
Street into the city’s ITS network coverage, which in turn would improve
traffic signal operation along this busy arterial in Lawrence.
If this funding award is accepted by the Commission, a detailed agreement between the city and KDOT will be executed at a future date.
Action Request
If appropriate, accept FY 2013 ITS Set-Aside funds (awarded by KDOT) in the amount of $150,000.00 to extend ITS network along 23rd Street.
