Update on KC MS 150
|
On September 14, 2010, the City Commission approved a Temporary Use of Public Right-of-Way Permit for the closure of Massachusetts Street from North Park Street to South Park Street from 1:00 p.m. on Friday 09/16/11 to noon on Sunday 09/18/11 for an overnight cycling village for the KC MS 150 bike ride (see staff memo and attachments from 09/14/10 meeting). At that time the Commission directed the organizers to attempt to minimize the amount of time Massachusetts Street needs to be closed for the setup of the cycling village.
The plans for the ride have been refined since the time of their initial presentation to the city. Organizers now plan to close Massachusetts starting at 6:00 a.m. Saturday to begin setting up tents on the street. South Park Street and Vermont Street will no longer need to be closed at all. The first of the 1,800+ riders will start arriving around 10:00 a.m. Saturday. They will approach South Park from the south on Massachusetts. They will check in their bikes for storage at the Community Building, pick up their luggage, and check in at a hospitality tent. Their will be entertainment and other events throughout the day as riders arrive. Riders will either camp in South Park or stay in area hotels. On Sunday morning riders will begin leaving in waves at 7:00 a.m.
