Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

 

WHEREAS:      People are contracting Lyme disease in all fifty states and in Douglas County; and

 

WHEREAS:      The increase in deer population has caused an increase in the tick population and an increased risk for tick-borne illnesses; and

 

WHEREAS:      Most diagnosed cases of Lyme disease are not reported, causing people to believe that it is rare here; and

 

WHEREAS:      Antibiotics are needed long term often for more than one year to decrease severe disability and death; and

 

WHEREAS:      Tick-borne diseases can often be prevented if people are aware, know how to prevent tick bites, and know how to remove ticks safely;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Aron E. Cromwell, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2011 as

 

“Lyme Disease Awareness Month”
