WHEREAS: Huntington’s Disease is an inherited, degenerative brain disorder that affects over 30,000 Americans with 200,000 more at risk, and currently has no effective treatment or cure; and
WHEREAS: Since the discovery of the gene that causes Huntington’s Disease in 1993, the pace of Huntington’s Disease research has accelerated and has served as a prototype for other neurological and genetic research; and
WHEREAS: The Huntington’s Disease Society of America, The Hereditary Disease Foundation, CHDI, and The Huntington Study Group are national research organizations dedicated to finding a cure for the disease; and
WHEREAS: The Hereditary Neurological Disease Center is conducting important research and providing evaluations, education and multi-disciplinary services and sponsors a Lawrence Huntington’s Disease support group that is celebrating six years of service;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Aron E. Cromwell, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2011 to be:
and urge citizens of this community to participate in events to increase their awareness about Huntington’s Disease.
